March 24th, 2007 Moganshan Lu
On Saturday night March 24th, Quiksilver presented a different sort of exhibition to the art crowd around Moganshan Lu. The usual quite music and open white walls were done away with in exchange for a skate halfpipe, a hip hop duo, and a half naked male dancer. The night was packed with the exciting and the strange…but with 80’s rock tunes of DJ T2M, the night was as smooth as Chinese silk.
Around 300 party goers were packed into the gallery space; all were in attendance for the 1626 Magazine launch party. The setting for the Quiksilver skateboard demo and fashion show was perfect: the halfpipe was placed among the wooden columns of an ancient Qing Dynasty stage, and the skaters were doing airs in between two pillars adorned with traditional Buddhist paintings. The combination of ancient and modern art, in the form of hip hop, fashion, and skateboarding was perfect. The crowd of artists and party animals gathered around the Quiksilver ramp, where all activities took place. Punk rock bands ripped the stage, breakdancers spun themselves into holes in the halfpipe, and the Quiksilver/Roxy models were walking through the crowd turning the heads of every photographer on site.
Thanks to all the skaters who came through for the event, especially the Finns, Kenny Reed, dudes from LA, Jay, Mat ‘5-0’ Morgan, and of course our favorite Brit boy Bobby.
Until next time…
